World Habitat Day

More than 30 years ago, the United Nations General Assembly took an important step in promoting the idea that everyone deserves a decent place to live by declaring that the first Monday in October would be World Habitat Day.

On Monday, Oct. 2, 2017, Habitat for Humanity joins with our partners around the world to rededicate ourselves to recognizing the basic right of everyone to adequate shelter. Habitat for Humanity participates in this international event because we know that adequate shelter is critical to improved opportunities, health and education.

Did you know that:

  • About 1 in 4 people live in substandard housing. If action isn’t taken, that number will grow to 2 out of 5 — the equivalent of 3 billion people — by 2030.
  • Habitat works in more than 1,300 communities across the U.S. and in over 70 countries.
  • Every day, more than 8,000 people find strength, stability and independence through safe, decent and affordable shelter in partnership with Habitat.

World Habitat Day is a special opportunity for Habitat for Humanity to call on individuals and organizations to help us address inadequate housing.
