AmeriCorps*National Direct Position

Title: Construction Crew Leader

Goal: Assist in the construction of new Habitat homes by ensuring that volunteers are well-employed while on the construction site, maintaining construction site safety and engaging in construction materials management.

Approximate Hours: Typical weekly schedule is Tues. through Fri., 7:15am to 4:00pm and Sat., 7:15 to 12:00pm; Mondays may be required as needed; vacation time for members will not be available during certain weeks of February, March and April, during which the weekly schedule will include Mondays.  Enrollment is on a rolling basis throughout the month of September.

Length of Commitment: Members must completed a minimum of 1700 service hours and serve through their term end date (approximately 10 ½ months)

Responsibilities:

  1. Welcome, organize, teach and lead volunteers in construction tasks.
  2. Prepare for daily construction tasks by attending morning construction meeting and assembling and collecting materials needed for each day’s task, including ice and water for volunteers.
  3. Assist construction department staff in all phases of construction, beginning with site preparation through closing.
  4. Serve as House Captain for at least two homes during the service year. This includes learning to read all associated plans and specifications, maintaining the construction schedule, coordinating deliveries and sub-contractor work, obtaining permits and scheduling inspections.
  5. Be familiar with Habitat’s and other relevant safety standards and ensure compliance.
  6. Attend all required affiliate events – weekly staff meetings, monthly AmeriCorps team meetings, dedications, volunteer appreciation events and others as required.
  7. Attend the National Service Leadership Conference and Build-a-Thon.
  8. Participate in a Martin Luther King, Jr. Day service event.
  9. Design and complete a Community Service Project.
  10. Complete timesheets, reports and other paperwork as required.

Qualifications: Must have good leadership, organizational, communication and interpersonal skills. Able to plan, organize and implement multiple tasks simultaneously, ability to work with minimal supervision, and willingness to work as part of a team. Member must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to operate the affiliate truck under the affiliate’s insurance. Previous experience with construction, architecture or related field is desirable, but not required. High School diploma or equivalent required, Associates or Bachelors Degree preferred.

Physical requirements: Ability to climb ladders and scaffolding, maneuver over uneven ground, stand most or all of day, and lift/carry 50 lbs; work environment is usually outdoors in a hot and humid climate with minimal office work.
