Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative

Beaches Habitat for Humanity firmly believes that every family deserves a simple, decent, affordable place to live and is now expanding its construction program to ensure just that. Instead of just building new homes, Beaches Habitat is now repairing homes owned by low- to moderate- income families. Volunteer teams and Beaches Habitat staff work with the partner families in order to execute the necessary repairs, which are completed at minimal costs to homeowners who would be unable to complete the repairs on their own.

We are completing repairs through two repair programs: A Brush with Kindness and Critical Home Repair.

A Brush with Kindness (ABWK)

ABWK focuses on minor, exterior repairs, specifically:

  • painting
  • caulking
  • minor siding and trim repairs
  • landscaping
  • yard clean up
  • board replacement in porches, stairs, and ramps
  • minor roof repairs
  • soffit and fascia replacement
  • window repairs
  • door replacement
  • retrofitting the exterior for handicap accessibility

Critical Home Repair

Critical Home Repair focuses on major repairs necessary to eliminate code violations, specifically:

  • window replacement
  • siding and trim repair or replacement
  • roof repair or replacement
  • retrofitting the home for handicap accessibility
  • installation or extension of house systems (heating, electrical, plumbing, etc.)
  • floor repair
  • wall repair
  • foundation repair

Interested in becoming an NRI Partner Family?

In order to qualify for either repair program, you must:

  1. Own and occupy a home east of St. John’s Bluff Road
  2. Demonstrate need:  You must own and occupy a home that needs repairs. Additionally, you must be unable to complete the repairs on your own due to age, health, and/or cost.
  3. Be willing to partner:  Willingness to partner encompasses the partner family’s acceptance and support of the Habitat mission. Prior to submitting the application, you must complete 4 hours of sweat equity. Once your application is approved, you must complete 8 hours of sweat equity for every $1,000 spent on your project. Finally, you must be on site while work is being completed on your home.
  4. Be able to pay:  The repairs are not free – the cost of the repairs is determined by the work completed. We will work with you to create affordable monthly payments to repay the zero-interest loan.

If you are interested in applying for either repair program, please call Joyce Freeman, our Family Services Director, at (904)241-1222 in order to receive an application.
