Beaches Habitat introduces the Dutton Island Gardeners!
Atlantic Beach, FL – Dutton Island Gardeners, or DIG for short, is a small community garden located at 96 Dutton Island Road near the Donner Community Center (Atlantic Beach, Florida 32233).
The idea for DIG began with two AmeriCorps members working for Beaches Habitat for Humanity, Becky Murray and Jade Carlin. They envisioned a community garden in the Donner area as a positive way to address the community’s limited access to agricultural education, nutritious food and outdoor activities.
Thanks to a number of dedicated volunteers and community partners, DIG is now in the process of making that vision a reality. Not only will this project nurture a greater sense of community in the area, but it will also provide space for the cultivation of fresh, locally-grown produce.
DIG will also offer educational opportunities for participants and community members alike in the areas of food production and healthy eating. Our hope is to start a positive movement that spreads to other areas of Atlantic Beach as time, energy, resources and interest develop.
If you are interested in obtaining a plot, volunteering, becoming a committee member, or just learning more about DIG, please join us for our first community forum. Light refreshments will be served.
