Beaches Habitat changed my life.

I never knew an organization could care so deeply about making a difference. That difference was so intentional that it forever changed my story.

My journey as a homeowner began nearly 12 years ago. My executive director encouraged me to apply for Beaches Habitat for Humanity. At the time, I was working as a housekeeper earning nine dollars an hour. I might have been skeptical if the suggestion had come from anyone else, but I was determined to find something stable for my son and me. Before buying our Beaches Habitat home, we had to move every two years. Growing up, I never attended the same school twice. I am grateful that my son could grow up in one home through all his years in school, thanks to Beaches Habitat for Humanity.

I was so excited to get started. After qualifying for the program, I spent every Saturday and all my vacation days completing sweat equity hours alongside the construction team. I learned to use power tools, lay sod, install windows, and even work on a roof. I gained confidence as a do-it-yourselfer while working with such knowledgeable and patient crew members. I also learned how compassionate people and organizations can be toward complete strangers.

Through that experience, and even now, I am reminded that together, we build more than homes. We build confidence, connection, and community.

Since moving into our home, my son and I have grown alongside our community. He is now in high school, surrounded by friends he has known since kindergarten, and he serves as a youth leader with Beaches Habitat. Thanks to the Scheidel Foundation Scholarship, I was able to attend college for Business Administration. Today, I work as a Business Office Director at a senior living community. I am also proud to give back by volunteering as a member of our HOA board. Alongside other board members, I help plan community events, improve our neighborhood, hire contractors, and strengthen relationships between homeowners and local businesses.

During the holidays, my home is full of people I love. One of my favorite traditions is decorating the Christmas tree in early November so we can enjoy it for Thanksgiving, my birthday, my son’s birthday, and Christmas. It is a simple thing, but because most of our celebrations happen here, joy, stability, and gratitude truly light up our home.

Beaches Habitat helped build more than just a home. It gave me confidence, stability, and a community that grows stronger every year.

This holiday season, as I look around my home filled with peace, I am reminded of what we have built together. I took a chance on Beaches Habitat, and Beaches Habitat took a chance on me.

With gratitude,

Ebony & Jaden
