Flipping the Script on Aging

Every May, the Administration for Community Living (ACL) celebrates Older Americans Month (OAM). It’s a time to honor the important role older adults play in our communities, learn more about aging, and support seniors in meaningful ways.

This year’s theme, “Flip the Script on Aging,” asks us to change how we think about growing older. Instead of seeing aging as a decline, we’re encouraged to see it as a time of strength, wisdom, and value. At Beaches Habitat for Humanity, we believe in this message. One way we show our support is through the Senior Repair Program, which helps older adults stay safe and independent in their homes.

Ralph and Cora’s Story

Ralph and Cora Forney have lived in their Atlantic Beach neighborhood for over 40 years. Ralph, a Navy veteran, and Cora, a proud mother of six, have spent years building a life in their community. After so many years, the house needed some care to protect it from the weather.

When Ralph and Cora learned about the Senior Repair Program at Beaches Habitat, they talked to the staff about their options. Together, they made a plan to repaint and seal the outside of their house.

Later, Ralph and Cora shared that their old windows no longer closed. With support from The Home Depot Foundation and its Repair Corps grant, we were able to install new windows and further secure their home. Staff leader Brigid Barrett and a team of volunteers installed new windows, sealing out storms and bringing peace of mind.
