A Single Volunteer Opportunity That Changed Everything

When Greg Griffin first stepped onto a Beaches Habitat for Humanity build site in 2009, he wasn’t planning to become a longtime volunteer. He was simply there to support his daughter.

At the time, Greg’s daughter was leading her school’s community service club, and one of the group’s service projects was volunteering with Beaches Habitat. She asked her dad to chaperone for the day, and after spending time on the build site, Greg discovered something unexpected.

“I really enjoyed the experience,” he recalls. “I decided to come back, and I’ve been volunteering ever since.”

More than 15 years later, Greg remains one of our dedicated Beaches Habitat volunteers, helping build safe, affordable homes alongside fellow volunteers, staff, and future homeowners throughout the Jacksonville Beaches community.

Building More Than Homes

For Greg, volunteering with Beaches Habitat has always been about more than construction.

“The mission immediately resonated with me,” he says. “I enjoy the hands-on work and the opportunity to continue developing my construction skills. One of the most rewarding parts is getting to know the homeowners and seeing firsthand how our work changes their lives.”

Over the years, Greg has watched families achieve affordable homeownership while witnessing the lasting impact a safe, stable home has on their future. Those experiences continue to inspire him every time he arrives at a build site.

A Moment He’ll Never Forget

Among the many memories Greg has made as a Beaches Habitat volunteer, one continues to stand out.

He remembers helping complete a home in Ocean Gate where the homeowner’s granddaughter had hoped the house would be painted a particular color. When the family learned it would be painted differently, they could have been disappointed.

Instead, the homeowner simply smiled and said,

“It must have been God’s plan.”

“Their gratitude and joy, despite not getting exactly what they had envisioned, really stayed with me,” Greg says.

For Greg, moments like these are a reminder that Habitat homes represent far more than construction—they represent hope, stability, and new beginnings.

Serving On and Off the Build Site

Greg’s commitment extends well beyond the construction site.

In addition to volunteering with Beaches Habitat, he has served on the Beaches Habitat Board of Directors for the past four years and currently volunteers on both the Governance Committee and the Land & Construction Committee.

Whether he’s building homes, mentoring new volunteers, or helping guide the organization’s future, Greg believes everyone has something valuable to contribute.

There’s a Place for Everyone

One of the things Greg appreciates most is seeing everything that happens behind the scenes.

“I had no idea how much goes into every project or how many moving parts there are,” he says. “It’s remarkable to see everything that Habitat is able to accomplish for the community.”

His advice for anyone thinking about becoming a Beaches Habitat volunteer?

“Don’t be intimidated, and don’t assume you don’t have the skills to help. There is a place for everyone, no matter your experience level. If you’re willing to learn and lend a hand, you’ll be welcomed.”
