A New Chapter: Kathy’s First Year as a Habitat Homeowner

Last August, Kathy and her three children— Jaylin, Ariana, and Karter—moved into their Beaches Habitat home. Originally from Brooklyn. NY, Kathy works in the Hematology/Oncology department at the University of Florida. Before homeownership, stability felt out of reach.

Encouraged by a friend and fellow Habitat homeowner, Kathy applied for the program. When she got the approval call, she was overwhelmed with gratitude. “I actually started crying but felt at peace at the same time,” she recalls.

The Power of Sweat Equity

Through her sweat equity hours, she found joy in the hands-on work of building her home alongside volunteers. “It’s gratifying knowing you’re helping others while building your own home,” she says.

A Sense of Security

Now, homeownership has given her family a profound sense of security. “We have something that is ours, and no one can take it away,” she shares. While the journey wasn’t always easy, she’s proud to see her children embrace their new home.

Inspiration for the Future

Looking ahead, Kathy is committed to providing a safe, nurturing environment and hopes her journey inspires her children to chase their
dreams. Her advice to future homeowners? “Be prepared for the journey, commit to the process, and enjoy it. You’ll be amazed at what you
accomplish.”

Kathy’s story is a powerful reminder of the impact of affordable homeownership. Congratulations, Kathy, on your well-deserved home!
